10-Year-Old Awaiting Heart Transplant Performs ‘KiKi Challenge’

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A girl awaiting a heart transplant at Lurie Children’s Hospital has recorded a video that’s getting a lot of attention, but she really hopes just one special person sees it.

"Hi, my name is Sophia, I am 10-years old and I am about to turn 11. My birthday is this weekend and I LOVE your music," said Sophia Sanchez, in a video addressed to rapper Drake.

Sophia Sanchez will be 11 on Saturday, Aug. 18 and for her birthday she has two wishes: a new heart and a visit from her idol.

"I was hoping you could come cheer me up for my birthday, or any time this week. I am at the Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago because I have heart failure."

Sophia has been waiting for a new heart at Lurie Children’s for the past several weeks. She was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition that often leads to heart failure and need for heart transplantation in order to survive. Three weeks ago, she underwent open heart surgery in order to connect a ventricular assist device, which is a mechanical pump that helps support the heart and blow flow in people with heart failure. Most often, it serves as a bridge to heart transplantation. Each year Lurie Children’s performs only four VADs.

Sophia created a video of her and her cousin performing the KiKi dance to Drake's song, "In My Feelings" down the hallway at the hospital, while she was tethered to her IV pump.

Drake is performing at the United Center on Friday and Saturday.
