A record-setting number of patients received life-saving organ, eye and tissue transplants from donors in 2019. Still, 20 people in the U.S. die each day waiting for an organ transplant.
Friday, Feb. 14 is National Donor Day, an observance designed to raise awareness of the need for more registered donors.
According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, about 156,000,000 Americans are registered to be organ, eye and tissue donors. That's about 60% of the U.S. adult population.
Despite the high participation rate, nearly 113,000 patients are waiting for organs that can save or enhance their lives.
