The Eagles are bringing in an old friend in an attempt to help a suddenly desperate situation at running back.
According to an NFL Network report, the Eagles will be hosting Jay Ajayi on Friday for a visit and workout, a sign that a roster move could be coming.
The Eagles are dealing with injuries to both running back Jordan Howard (shoulder) and Darren Sproles (quad). Howard has been limited all week in practice, while Sproles didn't practice at all on Thursday, and it is unlikely he practices on Friday either. With the status of both players very much up in the air for Sunday, the Eagles could go into a crucial game with just Miles Sanders and Boston Scott at running back.
Ajayi, 26-years old, played a key role in the Eagles' Super Bowl victory in 2017, and appeared in four games for the Eagles last season. He has totaled 592 yards on 115 carries with four touchdowns during his time with the Eagles. He was a free agent this offseason but didn't sign with a team despite getting a handful of workouts. It is very possible the knee issues Ajayi has dealt with throughout his career is the reason why he hasn't been signed.
Although both Sproles and Howard are injured, Ajayi would seem to be more of a replacement for Howard, as they are similair players and could fill similar roles on the Eagles' offense. Not having Howard this Sunday would be an obviously big blow to the offense, considering he has arguably been their best skill position player this season.
The Eagles roster is currently at 53 players, meaning if Ajayi is signed, the Eagles would either have to relase a player or place someone on injured reserve to open up a roster spot.
