(Connecting Vets) - When Isabel can’t hug her military dad, she holds her "daddy doll" close instead.

Photographer Samantha Byrd's two children are often separated from their dad while he is on deployment for months at a time.

In a blog post on Love What Matters, Samantha says,"As a photographer, I spend my time capturing memories for others. I know how an image can seem to stop time. And with every separation of my children from their father, I use photographs to document their lives. Showing him their small triumphs of everyday life and of growing up."

Little Isabel tells her mom that her heart hurts when he’s away, but the plush toy with his picture on it seems to help ease the pain and fill an absence until daddy comes home.

So even when their dad is thousands of miles away, Samantha and her children can carry his love wherever they go.

Samantha tells she hopes "all the other military spouses going through something similar can read (this story) and know that they are not alone in the struggle!"
