PORT JEFFERSON STATION, N.Y. (WCBS 880)
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and Caliber Home Loans teamed up to honor Sargent Dashan Briggs, who was tragically killed in March in a helicopter crash when deployed in Iraq. On Tuesday, the two foundations presented a $33,000 check to Rebecca Briggs, his widow, which would go towards paying off her mortgage in an effort to make her life easier.
“Of course, doing it by myself [paying off her mortgage>, you know, would be very tough,” Briggs said. “I’d probably have to have a couple of jobs and not be able to see my kids much. So, this just makes it very easy where I can be with them and it’s one less thing I have to stress over.”
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation is named after firefighter Stephen Siller, who died honorably on Sept. 11, 2001. The organization is dedicated to celebrating fallen military members and first responders, including the late Sargent Briggs.
The Port Jefferson Station resident accepted the check with their two-year-old daughter in her arms and three-year-old son by her side.
“I am forever grateful,” she said.
Briggs explained that being mortgage free would allow her family to remain in their memory-filled home, and save her from the burden of working several jobs.
"To be able to stay in our home forever and, where our memories were made, and I won't have to work multiple jobs and I can be there for my kids.”
