Maybe the very thought of cooking a big meal on Christmas Day stresses you out. Maybe it has never been a part of your holiday traditions. Whatever the reason you might be looking for a place to eat on Dec. 25 might be, you may have a tough time finding a restaurant that isn’t closed. There are some that keep their doors open though and some of them even run specials for the holiday. If you’re in the Norfolk area, here are some spots you can count on to be open on Christmas Day.
The pan-Asian menu takes bits from a variety of cuisines -- think kimchi, vindaloo curry and duck lumpia along with an extensive cocktail menu. If you’re looking for a little counter-programming to traditional Christmas fare, this is the place to do it.
Where: 430 West 21st Street, Norfolk, VA
Like a lot of places open on Christmas Day, Catch 31 is in a hotel -- the Hilton -- but don’t let that dissuade you from going. The long menu of seafood and the beachy vibe on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk will make for a filling and relaxing holiday meal.
Where: 3001 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA
It wouldn’t be a Christmas Day restaurant list without at least one Chinese spot. The menu doesn’t look all that different from the litany of inexpensive Chinese restaurants (pork dumplings, hot and sour soup, sesame chicken, you know the drill), but Ya-Ya’s food has distinguished the restaurant among locals and visitors alike. The sleek, modern interior also makes an enjoyable place to sit for a meal in addition to ordering out.
Where: 109 College Place, Norfolk, VA
Head to the Café Provençal at the Williamsburg Winery for Christmas dinner. Cost is $69 per person (plus tax and gratuity) with an optional wine pairing added to the cost for an additional $30.
Where: 5800 Wessex Hundred, Williamsburg, VA
Inside the Founders Inn, Swan Terrace also traditionally has a Christmas Day buffet that has featured dishes like Virginia oyster stew and biscuits and gravy. You may even be able to stick around and stop at the spa to sweat out some of the food you just devoured.
Where: 5641 Indian River Road, Virginia Beach, VA
Like an old friend, Waffle House and its smothered hash browns are always there for you, 24/7, and that includes Christmas. It’s not fancy, but it sure does hit the spot.
Where: Multiple locations, see Waffle House’s website for details.
So Victoria’s isn’t actually open on Christmas Day, but they do have a wonderful, kitschy Christmas tradition that’s worth checking out in the weeks leading up to the holiday. The whole restaurant is invaded by an army of nutcrackers throughout the entire place.
