Imagine having to choose between following your doctor’s recommended treatment for a life-threatening condition or paying your family’s monthly living expenses.
Getting the best care sometimes means cancer patients must travel away from home. With treatments lasting anywhere from weeks to months, the cost of travel and lodging for these patients can be overwhelming. Patients sometimes choose to delay or refuse treatment altogether due to mounting costs.
“Going through cancer treatment is never easy – physically or emotionally,” says Dr. Richard Wender, Chief Cancer Control Officer for the American Cancer Society. “The added burden [of lodging costs] can feel insurmountable.”
For many cancer patients with limited means, The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge will be the only way they can access the potentially lifesaving treatments they need. Each Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment is in another city. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. With more than 30 locations across the country, Hope Lodge facilities are more than just a place to sleep. They offer a community of caring and resources to give patients and caregivers help and hope when home is far away, including health and wellness programs and social interaction.
Artists Take Action
After experiencing the cancer battle first-hand with friends and family, the members of Sugarland and pop star Meghan Trainor have decided to act. This month, as Sugarland travels the country on its Still The Same tour, the band will ask fans to support a special Prizeo campaign to raise funds for Hope Lodge. Trainor’s fans will also be asked to give so that cancer patients may have a home away from home at Hope Lodge. Each fan who makes a donation of at least $10 will be entered into a sweepstake offering VIP concert experiences for each artist. There will also be a great list of secondary prizes, and the more you donate, the more entries you will receive!
“Together with the American Cancer Society, we can make a bigger difference in the fight against cancer,” says Sugarland’s Kristian Bush.
A Constant Need
In 2016, ACS eased the burden for 24,000 patients and caregivers through its Hope Lodge program, providing them peace of mind and the best possible shot at recovery. This free lodging helped families save an estimated $37 million in hotel expenses. But these crucial facilities require constant funding to stay open. For a single cancer patient and their caregiver to stay at the Hope Lodge for just one night, the average cost to ACS is $50 per room per night, or $1,500 per room for a month.
Together with supporters like you, The Society has made outstanding strides in cancer research, prevention, detection, and treatment – and saved millions of lives.
