It was a throwback night at the VMAs last night as the Black Eyed Peas closed out the award show with a performance of “I Gotta Feeling.”
There was one common question that circulated online last night following their performance. Where’s Fergie?
Fergie left the Black Eyed Peas back in 2017 and the group wasted no time finding a new singer to slide right in. J. Rey Soul, real name Jessica Reynoso, joined the group as a female vocalist and “semi-official” member back in 2018. She joined the group on their world tour in 2019 and became a full-fledged member after her work on their latest album Translation.
J. Rey Soul and the Black Eyed Peas connection stretches farther back then 2018 as she first became acquainted with the group in 2013. In an interview with Billboard, Reynoso says it all began when Apl.de.ap chose her to join his team on the Philippines version of The Voice.
She remained in touch with the group and guested on their 2018 project. Masters of the Sun Vol. 1.
While she toured with the group and gained exposure to their fans, it was her first appearance with the group at a major awards show. Naturally, that led to some confusion for viewers who may have been expecting Fergie.
Nevertheless, J. Rey Soul had a fantastic VMAs debut as the Black Eyed Peas lit up the crowd and were listed as one of the best moments from the award show.
The members of Black Eyed Peas and Fergie remain on good terms though. “Fergie is our sister. So even with these small connections, she's always going to be our sister. But unfortunately, our schedule is displaced by [her] wanting to be a great mom, and she wants to focus on that," Apl.de.ap said in an interview a few months ago.
