2019 marks the 33rd anniversary of the Department of Defense celebrating military children during the month of April.
As of 2017, there are over 1.5 million military children according to DoD — and more than two-thirds are 11-years-old or younger.
The Month of the Military Child programming allows all branches to recognize the sacrifices, experiences, and challenges that come with being a “military brat.”
“Purple Up! for Military Youth,” an initiative created through 4-H Military Partnerships, is a way for people to show support for the military family community in a visible way. This year, the Defense Department is encouraging everyone to show their support by wearing the color purple on April 10. The choice of color comes from a combination of all the military branch colors, symbolizing bringing all military children together in celebration.
This year, the Exchange and Defense Commissary Agency partnered with Coca-Cola Co. and Nabisco to award $10,000 in scholarships to military children.
From April 1 to April 20, parents can simply text “PURPLE” to 89884 for a chance to win one $5,000 grand prize or one of five $1,000 first prizes.
In addition to free money for college, Army & Air Force Exchanges are offering a limited-edition patch to military children on April 6. Next Saturday, April 13, participating exchange restaurants are offering a free side item, drink or dessert for kids 18 and younger wearing purple.
From moving all over the globe to living through deployments, military children make their own sacrifices — and during the month of April, they're honored all over the world.
