Army identifies Green Beret killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense identified the soldier who died Dec. 23, 2019, while supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael J. Goble, 33, of Washington Township, New Jersey, died as a result of injuries sustained while his unit was engaged in combat operations on Dec. 22, 2019, in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan.

The incident is under investigation, but the Taliban claimed responsibility for the death.

Goble was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Eglin Air Force Base, Florida.

Monday's KIA brings the total number of American soldiers killed in Afghanistan in 2019 to 20. Over 2,400 American troops have been killed in Afghanistan since 9/11.
