If you're a veteran in Chicago this weekend, there's an expo you'll want to check out.

The Illinois Hires Heroes Consortium Veterans Expo is a first-of-its-kind event that will put veteran resources, careers, and future employers all in one place.

The expo — run in partnership with the Chicago Wolves, the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs, Illinois Department of Employment Services, SHRM Foundation, Illinois State Council SHRM, and other local partners — is this Saturday, Oct. 26 starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Allstate Arena and ending with a free Chicago Wolves vs. Manitoba Moose hockey game.

It's a hybrid between a hiring fair and a resource fair — but it's designed to be a little bit more of a tire-kicking event than a formal hiring event," said Tim Weaver, senior manager of partnerships for the Chicago Wolves. "About half the room is going to be employers that are currently actively recruiting, have positions, and will likely be doing on-site interviews and collecting resumes. The other half of the room is a combination of a few non-profits that provide benefits back to veterans specifically when it comes to workforce readiness."

The expo will also include state and local veteran agencies so veterans can learn more about their benefits, opportunities, claims processes, and more.

"We'll have not only over 30 employers but federal, state, county, and local agencies with those employers that will be there to not only offer job opportunities but military veteran resources and benefits such as educational assistance for veterans looking to go back to school, medical benefit claims they might have, and more," said Robert Lewis of the Illinois Hires Heroes Consortium.

"Come open-minded," Lewis advised veterans. "Come ready to not only get in front of some great employers who are looking for veterans but also come curious to find out what resources are available for veterans out there not only from a state perspective but from a federal perspective as well."
