Syracuse University has moved its popular Boots to Business program online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Established in 2013 with the Small Business Administration, Boots to Business is a two-day introduction to business ownership for service members and spouses set to transition out of the military within 12 to 18 months
Transitioning service members already have the skills to become successful business owners, said Kim Street, Boots to Business program director.
“They develop throughout their military careers the organizational skills they need to run their own businesses when they get out,” she said.
Boots to Business prepares transitioning service members for a future in entrepreneurship by laying the groundwork for business ownership and economic revitalization, Street added.
“This is a course for those who are in the idea stage of starting a business,” she said.
Normally offered as in-person training on military installations and even aboard aircraft carriers on occasion, B2B is taught by Syracuse instructors who have started businesses themselves, said Misty Stutsman, director of the Entrepreneurship and Small Business portfolio at Syracuse’s Institute for Vets and Military Families.
“They talk the talk and walk the walk,” she said.
The session also provides attendees with assistance in other self-employment opportunities as well as instruction on business basics. Students are also given the foundational knowledge they need to develop an actionable business plan.
Participants also receive an introduction to the resources available from the SBA to access start-up capital, technical assistance and contracting opportunities
Eleven virtual training sessions are scheduled to be held in 7 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Italy and Germany, through the end of this month that will reach more than 150 service members and spouses.
B2B is available free of charge at participating installations to service members and their dependents transitioning or retiring from the U.S. military.
