The Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s third annual Heroes and History Makers event honored military caregivers, the nation’s hidden heroes, and a country music superstar virtually Tuesday evening.
“The blessing of living in our great nation comes with the responsibility of uniting around issues that transcend political divides,” said Dole. “America, we want our hidden heroes to go to bed tonight knowing their stories have been heard, that their service and incredible sacrifice have been recognized.”
The Facebook Live event showcased the stories of military caregivers and the veterans they support. It featured appearances by Tom Hanks, chair of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Hidden Heroes Campaign, and Savannah Guthrie, TODAY co-anchor and Hidden Heroes ambassador.
Hanks said the once-a-year event is a way to drum up support for those caring for wounded, injured or ill veterans.
“You can help,” he said.
“Our veterans and our nation have never leaned on these caregivers as much as they have this year,” added Guthrie.
Also making special appearances were Adam Driver, Darius Rucker, Hilary Swank, Jocko Sims, Nico Santos, Joe Mantegna, Wilson Cruz, Geena Davis, and others narrating military and veteran caregiver stories.
Country music superstar Tim McGraw was also honored as this year’s recipient of the Tom Hanks Caregiver Champion Award.
