University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) has been a pioneer in distance education since its inception more than 70 years ago.

From the beginning, UMGC’s global mission has been to make a state university education accessible to working adults, service members, military families, and veterans, no matter where their service or life takes them.

In 1949, that meant being the first university to send faculty overseas to educate active-duty military personnel in Europe. In the mid-1990s, it meant being among the first universities anywhere to offer web-based courses.

UMGC has grown to become the largest online public university in the nation and a leading innovator in online learning―because online is where its students need the university to be.

The university now offers academic advising for military-affiliated students via its Virtual Advising Rooms (VARs) hosted on Zoom. In these rooms students can discuss their education goals, register for classes, get information about UMGC resources to supplement classroom instruction, learn about financial aid and scholarships, and much more.

Students can rest assured that UMGC’s advisers understand the challenges military-affiliated students face in earning a degree while balancing other full-time commitments.

"Throughout the last several months of operating 100 percent virtually, UMGC’s military and veteran advisors have worked with thousands of military-affiliated students," said Kelly Wilmeth, vice president of Stateside Military Operations at UMGC. "Students have expressed sincere gratitude to our advisors, not only for providing the services in a virtual environment that they normally provide onsite at military education centers, but also for being there as a lifeline during these very challenging times."
