Eligible veterans can now submit applications to participate in the 40th annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games.
The event takes place in New York City Aug. 8-13 and is hosted by Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“This year will be special as we celebrate 40 years of supporting veterans through the Games and honoring their unstoppable drive and determination,” said Dave Tostenrude, VA’s director of the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in a blog post.
Designed for military veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or other neurological conditions, the event is a sports and rehabilitation program.
The Games consist of 20 events, including adaptive e-Sports, adaptive fitness, air pistol and rifle, archery, basketball, boccia, bowling, disc golf, field events, hand cycling, nine-ball, power soccer, wheelchair rugby, slalom, softball, swimming, table tennis, and track. Athletes compete against others with similar athletic ability, competitive experience or age.
Events will be held throughout New York City, including Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and Rucker’s Park.
Veterans interested in competing may be completed online and the application period is open through April 2.
