The Buffalo Sabres' woes continued on Tuesday night, as they fell to 4-6-2 on the 2020-21 season after being shut out by the visiting New York Islanders at KeyBank Center, 3-0.
It was déjà vu in the early goings, as for the second-straight night it was Islanders captain Anders Lee opening the scoring in the contest. Lee accepted a cross-ice pass from defenseman Noah Dobson and beat Carter Hutton for a 1-0 edge.
The Islanders then took the déjà vu a step further when a little over seven minutes later, their second goal of the opening frame was scored by Jean-Gabriel Pageau. The forward also made it 2-0 on Monday night with a goal against Linus Ullmark.
Pageau's goal would mark the end of the scoring until the absolute final second of regulation, when Lee added an empty-net tally to bump the final score to 3-0. His goal just 4:43 into the evening stood as the game-winner for the Islanders, as goaltender Ilya Sorokin earned his first NHL win and shutout all in one night against the Sabres.
The closest Buffalo came to busting up the clean sheet for Sorokin was when Victor Olofsson seemed to extend his power play streak and point streak all in one with a goal on the man advantage in the third period. Unfortunately for the blue and gold, the goal was wiped out by a successful offside challenge by the Islanders. Jack Eichel was found to be offside earlier in the possession.
