Many of the influential conversations that have come out of RADIO.COM's I’m Listening initiative have come from candid stories and pieces of wisdom from our most beloved artists.
As we lead up to our September 23 broadcast of I’m Listening we wanted to reflect on the artists and musicians who have been consistently conscious about taking care of their mental state. From Katy Perry to Luke Combs, we are providing you with stories and advice from artists who believe that talk has the power to save lives.
While sharing her own sentiments about mental health, the iconic singer, Jewel shared her tips for coping with regular anxiety. The “Intuition” singer explains that pushing ourselves to be in the present moment often helps to shake the feelings that anxiety brings on. Anxiety stems from when “what ifs” start running through our brain. If we can focus on what is in front of us rather than getting ahead of ourselves, this may quell the unrest that anxiety can cause.
Jewel tells us that anxiety can sometimes be the scary story that is playing in your mind but might not be our reality. She suggests taking part in activities such as journaling, looking at our surroundings, or verbally reciting what we see in our general vicinity. Jewel encourages us to engage in an exercise that is grounding and can put your racing mind to a halt. “Anxiety is usually trying to tell us we’re not in agreement, she shares.” Jewel also suggests that writing down how our bodies feel is another mindful activity that can make use feel present again.
