Michael Bumpers was filling up his car this past July when he asked a stranger if he had a car jack he could use.
The stranger told Bumpers "no," and for some reason that didn't sit right with the Charlotte, North Carolina man, who grew upset that he couldn't find the help he required.
So in an act of revenge, Bumpers set the stranger's car on fire, and accidentally set himself ablaze in the process.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is currently looking for the suspect, who they are referring to as "Smokey," reports Fox 46 in Charlotte.
Several area residents told the outlet they would be on edge until the arson suspect was caught.
Local residents who were shown a video of the incident by Fox 46 were shocked when the moment the arson attempt backfired.
“Wow. Oh he set himself on fire. He’s stupid. He’s crazy,” one person said.
Another man was concerned by the harm that could have been done, saying, "Somebody could’ve died that car could’ve exploded and the damage to all the other stuff that’s around. You could’ve hurt innocent people just because somebody tells you no."
Police are still trying to locate Bumpers, and have offered a cash reward for any information leading to his arrest.
