Serena Williams couldn’t be prouder of her husband, Alexis Ohanian.
The Reddit co-founder announced that he is joining the fight against racial injustice by stepping down from the company’s board.
Ohanian announced his resignation in a blog post, in which he urged the board to replace him with a black candidate.
“I’m writing this as a father who needs to be able to answer his black daughter when she asks: ‘What did you do?’” Ohanian said in the post explaining his decision adding, “it is long overdue to do the right thing.”
He said the move was the right thing to do for "myself, my country and my family."
Williams showed love and support on Instagram writing: “It’s never easy to walk away from something you helped create. But doing something to catalyze change is never easy.”
On Twitter, the professional Tennis player wrote: “So proud of your commitment to not just me but to “us.”
Additionally, Ohanian announced that any future gains from Reddit stock would be donated to serve the black community particularly to “curb racial hate.”
His first donation included $1 million to “Know Your Rights Camp” founded by NFL free agent and civil rights activist Colin Kaeprnick.
“I believe resignation can actually be an act of leadership from people in power right now. To everyone fighting to fix our broken nation: do not stop,” Ohanian added.
Reddit’s CEO and co-founder, Steve Huffman, responded in a blog post on Friday that assured Ohanian he would honor his request to fill the seat with a black candidate.
He also vowed to update the sites content policy with a statement on hate.
Ohanian co-founded Reddit in 2005 alongside Huffman and Aaron Swartz to "help people find community and a sense of belonging." He sold it to Conde Nast in 2006 before returning to the company full-time in 2015 alongside Huffman. He scaled back his day-to-day role again in 2018 to serve on the board.
Williams and Ohanian married in 2017 and share two-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia.
