If you need to be out and are in the area of Geary Blvd. and Steiner St. in San Francisco, you’ll notice a significant construction project underway at that intersection this holiday weekend.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's Geary Rapid Project includes the demolition of a pedestrian over-crossing at the intersection. The ongoing project is intended to improve bus service and pedestrian safety on Geary Blvd. between Stanyan St. and Market St.
"The plan was always to schedule this around Memorial Day when there are fewer cars on the roads because so many people are getting out of the Bay Area," Kato told KCBS Radio. "But given the current situation, traffic patterns are already very light on Geary as is."
According to the SFMTA's project website, the areas where the bridge ramps used to be will be repurposed for adjacent San Francisco Recreation and Park sites later this year.
The work started Friday night and is expected to continue through the long weekend.
The Geary Rapid Project is on schedule to be completed by Summer 2021.
