Ventura, California-based Patagonia is suddenly grabbing retail headlines after Outlander Magazine spotted a very political hidden message in the brand's new Men’s and Women’s Road To Regenerative Organic Stand-Up Shorts.
Yes, you read that right.
A company spokesperson has confirmed to HuffPost that yes, the tags are real, "because we have been standing up to climate deniers for almost as long as we've been making those shorts." The spokesperson also said that Patagonia’s founder, Yvon Chouinard, "has been saying 'Vote the assholes out' for several years."
He has - as recently as a few months ago.
Chouinard closed an open letter in late April, where he discussed climate change and the coronavirus pandemic, with the same sentiment: "P.S. Remember, vote the assholes out - all of those politicians who don't believe we should do anything about climate change."
The outdoor company, known for its pricey t-shirts, hats, coats and vests, has never shied away from political statements.
Patagonia has an entire "Activism" section on its website dedicated to causes it supports, including "supporting youth fighting against oil drilling to suing the president." In April, the company famously changed its policy for corporate clothing sales and joined the movement to boycott Facebook and Instagram over misinformation in June.
Climate change is quickly becoming a central issue in the 2020 campaign as states up and down the West Coast suffer from devastating wildfires.
This past Monday, President Donald Trump sparred with state officials over climate change during a visit to California for a briefing on deadly wildfires. Democratic nominee Joe Biden also made remarks on the subject Monday, sharply criticizing his opponent for lack of action.
