SAN JOSE, CA (KCBS Radio) - San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo is reportedly in good spirits and expects to be home Thursday after suffering multiple bruises, scrapes and fractures in a bicycling accident on New Year’s Day.

Liccardo is an avid cyclist and was struck by an SUV while bicycling about three miles northeast of downtown San Jose. He was hospitalized at Regional Medical Center.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and was not arrested. Police say they do not think drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

Liccardo thanked his friends and neighbors for their well-wishes, as well as the first responders and hospital staff who tended to his injuries.

“I’d like to thank compassionate neighbors like Linda and Tom who rushed to help immediately after the accident; the fast and professional response from Fire Station 19 and the San Jose Police Department; the wonderful paramedic care from Alex and her team; and the outstanding medical attention from Dr. Jimenez and the entire staff at Regional Medical Center,” said Mayor Liccardo. He also joked: “Fortunately, the doctors state that all defects to the head were pre-existing conditions.”
