Big surf brings big names, crowds in Santa Cruz

The High Surf Advisory from the National Weather Service is bringing out surfers in record numbers at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz.

It’s pretty incredible to watch the waves.

By Sunday, they’re expected to be as high as 30 feet.

"I had a fun time surfing," said three-time Mavericks winner Darryl "Flea" Virostko. "I try to surf every day if I can. The waves are going to be really good. It’s going to get bigger again in the next three days."

The huge waves are attracting other big names, too.

"A lot of the pros haven’t surfed Steamer Lane, so they’re coming up here to surf it," said surfer Tim Pappas. "Watching the top surfers in the world coming out here practicing at Steamer Lane."

People are coming in droves to watch.

It can be pretty dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.

"Stay behind the fence and enjoy the show, because Sunday (and) Monday is going to be massive," Pappas added.
