Vallejo city council member faces recall campaign amid mayoral election

A recall campaign has been launched against embattled Vallejo City Council member Hakeem Brown, as the mayoral candidate is accused of hiding a criminal history from voters.

According to public records, Brown has a criminal record, which includes multiple convictions for drugs, weapons and spousal and domestic abuse, which resulted in a four-year term in state prison.

"In addition, it appears that Mr. Brown was married to at least two women at the same time, according to extensive and well-documented research conducted by Open Vallejo," said Vallejo resident Mark Stein, who is helping to launch the recall campaign against Brown.

A petition was started on last week asking Brown to resign and has over 2,400 signatures.

Recall co-leader Myrna Hayes said they decided to launch the recall, even as Brown is running for Mayor. If he's elected, she said: "We’ll just switch gears to recalling the mayor."

Hayes also said they're tired of controversies that have rocked their city, like the recent police badge bending scandal. Brown has so far not commented on the recall campaign, but in a Facebook post, he took full responsibility for his previous criminal actions.
