HARRISBURG, Pa (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Governor Tom Wolf is reiterating the imporatance of Health Secretary Rachel Levine's mandatory mask order ahead of the July 4th holiday weekend.

“As we approach the Fourth of July holiday weekend and we see another spike in cases today in Pennsylvania, it’s critical that Pennsylvanians take the mandate to wear masks seriously,” Gov. Wolf said. “This virus is not gone and mask-wearing is a required mitigation effort that we know works to stop its spread.

“We have seen evidence that indicates Pennsylvania’s recent case increases can be traced to settings where people were not wearing masks or practicing social distancing. This can lead to more and more cases in our state. We have made such tremendous progress, let’s not let that progress go to waste, risking lives and livelihoods.

“We all must do one simple thing to stop the spread of COVID-19: Wear a mask, Pennsylvania.”

On Wednesday, Pennsylvania's Health Secretary Rachel Levine issued an order for all of Pennsylvania that makes the wearing of a face mask mandatory when someone leaves their home, not just when visiting a business as had previously been the case. Levine said, “It is essential that Pennsylvanians wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “While cases increase in some areas, we cannot become complacent. My mask protects you, and your mask protects me. Wearing a mask shows that you care about others, and that you are committed to protecting the lives of those around you.”

The order was met with opposition by some, but Levine defended the order when speaking with the KDKA Radio Morning show and said, "This is not a political issue. This is not a partisan issue," Levine said. "This is a public health issue. Really, public health experts are uniform about the need for mask wearing."
