PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — A somber memorial service was held Thursday for three fallen police officers, on the 10th anniversary of the fatal ambush in Stanton Heights.
Jene Meyers is the niece of Officer Kelly; she told KDKA Radio’s Joe DeStio her uncle was coming off his shift that day when the radio call came in.
“That just goes to show how a stand-up man he was because he could have easily heard the call and went in the house. But he didn’t. He thought about somebody else besides himself and took it upon himself to go around the corner and help his fellow officers.”
Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert was there paying tribute to the life and sacrifice of the men.
“We can’t forget the sacrifice, but it’s important that we always remember the lives that they lived. They were good men, good officers,” Schubert said.
“It hurts, it hurts us, it hurts ten years later.”
