PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - A 12-year-old singing phenom from Pittsburgh appeared on America's Got Talent this week.
Singer Ashley Marina, from Kennedy Township, took the stage to sing "Anyway" by Martina McBride, only to be interrupted by judge Simon Cowell. He said Ashley picked the wrong song.
Cowell then asked if she had a second song to sing. Ashley did, and her second attempt was again, interrupted by Cowell.
The judges then asked her to come back later in the day to perform a third song.
Ashley's mom Nina tells KDKA Radio, after she was asked to come back and play a third song, they had no idea what song to perform and had to made a decision on an unprepared song and come up with a shorter version of it in all in an hour or so.
Everyone loved it, including Cowell.
When she returned - she blew everyone away. She sang one of her original songs that she wrote about her father and how he has always been there for her.
While she says she usually isn’t nervous but this was America’s Got Talent!
“I was really nervous but at the same time I knew that I could . . . get through my nerves,” said Marina.
Ashley’s father Mark says while it was intense for TV viewers, the pressure was amplified in person.
“The intensity that they showed on there, it was probably ten times more,” said Mark.
Ashley wrote the song for her father and Mark says it brought tears to his eyes.
What's next for Ashley?
"I just like going like day-by-day. We'll see what happens in the future and I hope I'll be doing this for like my living, because it's something that I'm really passionate about," she told the KDKA Radio Morning Show.
Ashley jokingly says she doesn’t know where her talent comes from because neither of her parents are musically inclined.
Ashley, who spent her first seven years in the Montour School District, now attends the Lincoln Park Performing Arts School.
