WEST LONG BRANCH, Nj. (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - According to a new poll from Monmouth University, presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden holds a 13 point lead over President Donald Trump, but those polled believe there are “secret Trump voters.”
Among all registered voters in PA, Monmouth says Bend has a 53 percent lead compared to Trump’s 40 percent with 3 percent supporting another candidate and 4 percent undecided.
Biden polled strong among Democrats (93 percent to 1 percent) and independent voters (54 percent to 33 percent).
Among Republican voters, Trump has an 84 percent to 12 percent lead over Biden.
“Even taking into account any polling error from four years ago, Biden is clearly doing well in swing areas. The Democrat has roots in this region which may be helping him, but there seems to be an overall erosion of support for Trump compared to 2016,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
Depending on voter turnout, Biden has a 7 to 10 point lead over Trump and Murray says that the 13 point lead isn’t an accurate number since all of those voters won’t turn out to vote in November.
While Biden holds a strong lead in the poll, many recall 2016 when Hillary Clinton had a lead but Trump ultimately won the state, the first Republican to do so in over 30 years.
“The media consistently reports that Biden is in the lead, but voters remember what happened in 2016. The specter of a secret Trump vote looms large in 2020,” said Murray.
The poll also shows that voters are not completely sold on him and numbers show that Biden’s lead isn’t going “significantly better” in swing counties like Allegheny and Philadelphia Counties.
“There’s still the potential for Donald Trump to be able to thread the needle and win Pennsylvania’s electoral votes,” Murray told KDKA Radio.
Over 50 percent of voters believe that there are “secret Trump voters” in their community.
Murray adds that their data shows that many Clinton supporters did not show up to the polls in 2016 thinking she had PA in the bag and that there wasn’t necessarily a large number of secret Trump voters.
