PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Pittsburgh police report that a one-year-old has died after being shot in the head in the 100 block of Rhine Place just after 6 p.m. on Monday.
Police quickly transported the baby to the hospital, with the sergeant driving while two officers worked on controlling the baby’s breathing in the backseat.
After reporting that the baby was in critical condition, police have reported that the baby has died.
According to police, the initial investigation shows the shot came from outside, traveled through a window, then through two walls, before hitting the baby.
Pittsburgh Police Chief Scott Schubert said, “Zykier Young should not be dead. And my heart breaks for the family. I can’t even imagine what they are going through today with the loss of their child. It’s senseless.”
No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. Pittsburgh Police are asking anyone with information to contact them. Assistant Chief LaVonne Bickerstaff said, “We can’t do this by ourself. We never have done it by ourself. You have always stood with us and we need you to stand with us today.”
“It really tugs on the emotional heartstrings of everybody. If people can’t rally around and support this investigation and give information here, this is a baby, this is an innocent innocent baby,” said Commander Vic Joseph.
