PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Winter is on its way, and that means it's time to get your car ready.
AAA East Central's Jim Garrity told KDKA Radio drivers should keep an eye on tire pressure in cooler temperatures and to make sure their tires have adequate tread.
“By enough tread, that’s not ‘oh, I think I can make it until next year,’” Garrity said. “You don’t want to play around with tires. They will keep you connected to the road in inclement weather conditions.”
Garrity said that checking tire pressure and tread is key to making sure that your vehicle stays stead in slick conditions.
Dead car batteries are also a frequent issue when the temperatures drop. Garrity said that local AAA contractors jump started more than 70,000 vehicles last winter.
“When you have the hot, summer sun heating on that battery, it breaks down those internal components,” Garrity said. “Then you get really cold snaps, and cold mornings, and that’s when you get a break in dead batteries.”
Drivers are also advised to check their coolant levels and top off their wiper fluid with an anti-freeze formula.
