PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Port Authority will begin collecting fares again on June 8.
The authority made the rides on all vehicles free in March when implementing COVID-19 safety measures and ridership saw steep declines.
At Friday’s virtual board meeting, the Post-Gazette reports two dozen speakers said the agency should not reinstate full fares.
This coming Monday, bus riders are expected to be allowed to board through the front doors that has not been allowed since March.
Port Authority says they continue to install plexiglass shields on buses that are not yet equipped with them.
About 720 buses currently have protective shields installed.
Hand sanitizer dispensers are also being installed.
“The health and safety of our employees remains our highest priority, even as our community begins to rebound from the devastating effects this virus has caused,” said Port Authority CEO Katharine Kelleman.
