HARRISBURG (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - Summer is finally here and the weather is actually looking nice for the weekend.

State officials are warning those heading outside to cover up to prevent tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease.

State Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine says preventing a bite is the best way to do so:

“We want people to wear light-colored clothing so that they can see a tick and brush it away and if possible, to wear long-legged pants where you can even tuck it into your socks and that way the tick would have less ability to bite,” said Dr. Levine.

Bug sprays containing 20 percent or more of DEET can help repel ticks.

Officials also suggest doing "tick checks" after coming back inside, and removing any ticks found.
