Starbucks, McDonald’s and Walmart urge lawmakers to pass another stimulus package

Some of the country’s largest chains are appealing to lawmakers to pass another stimulus package amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The heads of Starbucks, McDonald’s and Walmart have all voiced their support for congress to approve new aid as people and small businesses continue to struggle due to the COVID outbreak.

"We need Congress to take action," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said, according to Business Insider.

Johnson shared an open letter in which he urged Congress to pass a second stimulus package.

"Starbucks urges Congress to take immediate bipartisan action to pass new COVID relief legislation to address the urgent needs in our communities, especially for the millions of Americans out of work, small businesses facing economic uncertainty and the public health needs of state and local governments on the front lines of the pandemic," Johnson wrote in the letter.

The coffee giant executive also disclosed Starbucks would be raising the pay of U.S. employees to at least $15 an hour over the next few years.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski echoed the need for more aid earlier this week.

"We need a stimulus measure, I think that is very clear," Kempczinski told CNBC.

In October, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon pressed on the need for more COVID relief.

"I think it's important that we all understand in some ways we are having a shared experience because we are in a pandemic together, but we are having a very different experience," McMillon told Yahoo Finance.

"If you have been let go and don't have income, you really need help," McMillon added. "The voice we have at Walmart is to say to Congress and the administration we need you to help those people who need help."

Negotiations on a second stimulus package have dragged on for months as Congress and the White House have failed to agree on a new proposal.

On Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s staff indicated Senate Republicans would most likely not support the most recent bipartisan $908 stimulus package proposal, reported CNBC.
