Wellness expert shares ways to manage isolation, change in traditions this holiday season

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Holidays can be stressful on their own, but add a pandemic and restrictions on travel or gatherings and health and wellness experts say many can experience feelings of isolation or sadness.

Robin Ross, a health and wellness instructor at the Soma Institute in Chicago, said it’s important to acknowledge those feelings but then have fun thinking of creative ways that you can still connect virtually this historic holiday season.

Ross emphasized the importance of emotional health and she says to pick up the phone if support from a family member, friend, or mental health professional is needed.

“And make a meaningful memory out of this Thanksgiving and Christmas because years from now we’re going to be talking about this. This is going to be something that we’re going to remember so make it a joyful memory,” Ross said.

Ross reiterated the importance of taking stock of your emotions, whatever they may be, and the letting yourself off the hook for feeling that way.

“[Have] self-compassion and [thinking], ‘I have every right to feel this way,’” she said.
