Dallas woman Marsha Evans runs The Senior Source, and through their Friendly Visitor Program, brings volunteers into assisted living and nursing home facilities to spend time with seniors.
Under normal circumstances, the program would routinely send volunteers to nursing homes and senior care facilities, but Evans and The Senior Source have had to shift gears due to the ongoing pandemic.
Wanting to make sure these senior still have visitors, as soon as nursing homes went into lockdown, Evans immediately began organizing nursing home car parades and outdoor musical performances. She's also hosted donation drives of snacks, games and iPads to facilities in need, and has recruited volunteers to create meaningful greeting cards for residents.
Evans has also organized volunteers from across the worlds to Facetime and Zoom seniors, contacting them on a regular basis, keeping them company by playing games or simply talking. Evans said, "So many residents have no family, some are estranged from the family some hardly ever get visitors. So that interaction from the outside was a lifeline for them."
As of now, Evans volunteers work with more than 300 senior facilities in Dallas County alone, impacting thousands of residents.
