Harvard Creates Color-Coded Real-Time COVID-19 Map

Harvard University has released a new interactive map with live time data intended to help the public and policymakers assess the threat or risk level of COVID-19 in their communities. 

Los Angeles County, for example, shows a 20.5 daily new coronavirus caseload per 100,000 over a seven-day range -- putting areas in L.A. County at "Covid Risk Level- Orange."

The map works in green, yellow, orange, and red scales -- red being the most at-risk. 

  • Red: 25 or more
  • Orange: 10 to 24
  • Yellow: 1 to 9
  • Green: Less than 1

“Uncertainty is the currency of pandemics. As evidence on the new coronavirus, how it spreads and who falls ill from it emerges slowly, policymakers and the public have to base their decisions on the best information available. Experts help interpret the evidence, but they may differ on details that can be confusing for non-experts -- and filtering out what matters from a rising sea of misinformation has become a daunting task. " Danielle Allen, director of Harvard's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, wrote on map's dashboard. “

"We also collectively need to keep focused on what should be our main target: a path to near-zero case incidence.”
