Larry King is opening up about the demise of his marriage to his seventh wife Shawn Southwick King.
The 86-year-old filed for divorce from his 26-years-younger spouse in August citing irreconcilable differences, three months after suffering a stroke.
Despite being married for 22 years, it was their age gap that proved to be one of the biggest hurdles in the long run.
“We had a big age difference and that eventually takes its toll,” Larry told People. “It became an issue.”
The famed television host also believes their different faiths played a part in the breakdown of their relationship.
“Also, [Shawn] is a very religious Mormon and I’m an agnostic atheist, so that eventually causes little problems,” he added. “We overcame a lot, but eventually it became a ships passing in the night situation.”
Following his stroke in May 2019, he found himself reassessing his priorities and what he wanted for his future.
"I thought a lot about what I wanted the rest of my life to be," he admitted. "When there are moments of unhappiness in a marriage, you can overcome it at 40, but at my age, it became a lot. I wanted to be happy. Separating was of course difficult. But there is nothing worse than arguing."
While their marriage may not have worked out, the “Larry King Now” host says he’ll always care about Shawn.
“I wish her nothing but the best,” he said. “We love each other.”
Married in 1997, Larry and Shawn share two children, sons Chance, 20, and Cannon, 19.
Although Shawn was his seventh wife, Larry has been married eight times, having previously tied the knot twice with the same woman.
