A Trenton Police Officer is recovering from surgery after being shot in the abdomen while transporting an inmate.

Trenton is in north central Missouri, about 94 miles from Kansas City.

Friends, family and others are rallying around Officer Jasmine Diab after Friday afternoon's incident.

"It was hard to imagine anybody wanting to hurt her, to harm her in any way" said Kara Wilson, a friend of Diab's. "It breaks your heart."

Officer Diab was shot while driving on 69 Highway, near Winton. There was a struggle with the prisoner, Jamey Griffin, 38, who was restrained in the passenger seat.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jake Angle was asked whether it is unusual for a prisoner to be placed in the front seat of a transport vehicle.

Policies vary, but still, it's inherently dangerous," Angle said.

Griffin was scheduled to appear in court this week on an assault charge, court records show. Griffin now faces additional charges for the weapon and for allegedly assaulting a law enforcement officer.
