Lee's Summit, MO – The pandemic won't stop the holiday sparkle and magic from happening in downtown Lee's Summit this year. The Mayor's Tree Lighting is set to happen Friday night, November 20th, between 6-8pm.
However, the tradition of illuminating the downtown streets of Lee's Summit will be a little different this time around. There will be no in-person program or gathering for the tree lighting. The event will be streamed live on Facebook, and folks are being encouraged to either drive or walk through to enjoy the lights, including the shop window displays decorated with live mannequins.
Melissa Wuennenberg, owner of Very Violet Boutique and Ivy & Sparrow, says the live window displays are like looking into a snow globe. "You’re just watching all the little action," she says. "We just want to keep the holiday spirit going even though things do look so much different this year.”
Wuennenberg says that one shop window will feature familiar holiday characters the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who decorating a tree, and there's word that Santa will even take some time behind the protective glass of a storefront.
More than a dozen storefronts in downtown Lee's Summit will have live displays.
