ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - Uncertainty and anxiety are creating a whole different kind of workplace stress in 2020.

"Mental illness is the single greatest cause for worker disability and 62% of missed work days can be attributed to mental health conditions," says Mary Ames Smith, President of the Society for Human Resources of Greater St. Louis.  Ames Smith tells KMOX the pandemic and social upheaval are creating more concern about mental well being.  "Certainly we've seen an uptick in utilization, especially with the current social distancing... ...in the telehealth arena and virtual health arena in seeking assistance and resources."

Smith says one of the biggest stresses for employees is lack of access to childcare, especially for people who work at businesses considered essential.

She says communication is key -- companies can often help employees tap into resources and assistance programs if they know there's a need.
