JUPITER, Fla. (KMOX) - Jose Martinez's smile is hard to miss. Add on his laughs and very vocal celebrations during spring training live batting practice and you'd think the guy was a multi-million dollar starting left fielder.

He's currently on the outside looking in for a starting spot with the St. Louis Cardinals this season – although he's had the best batting average of any Cardinal in each of the past two seasons. In a media scrum Thursday, manager Mike Shildt was told by MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch that Martinez said "he would rather be here without a job than have been traded this offseason." Shildt was struck by the comment.

"That is a huge compliment. A huge compliment," Shildt says. "It speaks well of Jose for being just that considerate of the organization."

You can hear more of what Shildt had to say about his possible fourth outfielder in the video above.
