Coronavirus Facts Only: Tests for possible COVID-19 cure in Brazil halted after 11 patient deaths

(KMOX) - A small chloroquine study in Brazil has been halted over the risk of fatal heart complications.  The Brazilian study involved 81 COVID-19 patients.  By the sixth day of testing, 11 patients had died after taking the high dosage of chloroquine.

SLU Care general internist at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital Dr. Fred. Buckhold says we know there are side effects of this medication.  But he says we need good scientific testing of these treatments.

If they show harm, that's a big downside.  He says the same about another drug being tested Remdesivir -- which he says appears a bit more promising -- but still good science must be done.

SLU researchers are now conducting a study on that drug.
