ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The only Black driver in NASCAR’s top circuit, Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. has been named the recipient of the 2020 Stan Musial Award for Extraordinary Character.
Identified as "one of the most important sports figures of 2020," Wallace will be honored – and presented his award – in the Musial Awards television broadcast airing nationally on CBS on Saturday, Dec. 26.
The Stan Musial Award for Extraordinary Character honors an individual who demonstrates remarkable poise, perseverance and overall sportsmanship.
He was involved in one of the biggest stories in sports this year, after the FBI came in to investigate the discovery of a noose in Wallace's garage stall. The entire industry rallied around the driver, who in 2018 became the first fulltime Black driver in NASCAR’s premier Cup Series and finished second in his Daytona 500 debut.
The investigation described the incident a misunderstanding.
