ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The St. Louis Cardinals announced Sunday evening that a member of the organization has died after a month-long battle with COVID-19. Amateur scout and former first-round MLB pick Charles Peterson died at 46-years-old.

“Charles had an incredible impact on our scouting department. He brought a tremendous work ethic, keen eye, and booming laugh with him every day," says Randy Flores, Assistant G.M./Scouting Director. "My prayers are with his wife Karen and family as anyone who ever talked to CP knew how proud he was of them."

An #STLCards scout, Charles Peterson, needs support both financially and through prayers as he fights for his life against COVID-19. Gofundme campaign has raised $27k in two days but more is needed.

Peterson played five years in the minors after being drafted in 1993 by the Pittsburgh Pirates and began his scouting career by working for the MLB Scouting Bureau. He was hired by the Cardinals in 2012 and scouted in the upper Midwest area before returning to his home state of South Carolina and serving as Special Assistant to the Scouting Director.

He was the signing scout of 2020 first-round daft pick Jordan Walker, catcher Andrew Knizer and others.

“Charles always would light up the draft room," says John Mozeliak, President of Baseball Operations. "His smile, his voice, his knew it was Charles. He was a special man that made others better. He will be missed."

Over the weekend a GoFundMe was set up for Peterson, who had been hospitalized since Aug. 17 after a COVID-19 diagnosis. More than $36,000 was raised "for Charles and his family to help ease the burden this terrible illness has placed on them."

Messages of hope and love for Peterson and his family have been posted by those who knew he well on social media throughout the weekend:

I need my prayer warriors to please include my family friend Charles Peterson (Pete) in your prayers. He means alot to our baseball community at all levels. He's been fighting for his life since catching Covid-19 and he's in need of a miracle. Pray Hard

Very sad news. A great athlete who led Laurens to its last football state title in 1991. He then continued to give back to two sports and drew praise from all he touched.Cardinals scout Charles Peterson dies after COVID-19 battle | The State
