ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOX) - Illinois State Police announced early Sunday afternoon that there was no remaining threat to the public, following the morning's shutdown of Interstate 255 in parts of St. Clair and Madison counties.

Just after 6 a.m. Sunday, a man matching the description of an overnight murder suspect from East St. Louis was spotted in the highway median.

Troopers say the man opened fire on them,  and one of the troopers returned fire. The man then fled into a wooded area.

State police captured him just before 11 a.m. Sunday.

No injuries were reported.

ISP and East St. Louis Police are working with prosecutors on filing charges.
