ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - If you get a call demanding immediate payment from your utility company, hang up the phone.

KMOX Virtual Consumer Editor Megan Lynch spoke with Ameren about the latest warning for customers in Illinois and Missouri -- sophisticated scammers are imitating utility company reps.

"They're calling from phone number XY but they're able to put our caller ID on it," explains Ameren Security Supervisor Maria Gomez. "So it will look like it's coming from 800 number that people can call to get customer service, but it's actually a completely different number."

Gomez says if you get a call demanding immediate payment and the caller is threatening to cut off your service, hang up. You can report the call at Ameren Illinois at 1.800.755.5000 or Ameren Missouri at 1.800.552.7583.

The utility says if you truly are late on payments, the first contact would come in form of a letter and you would have a chance to work out payments.
