Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay says the city saw a substantial rise in violent crime in 2020 with 52 criminal homicides, up about 45% from 2019’s total of 36.

Ramsay said it will take a lot of effort to figure out the underlying issues to bring the numbers down in 2021.

The Sedgwick County Jail has more than 1,500 inmates, which is a record.

Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says 110 of the inmates are charged with murder, the most that have ever been housed at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.

Easter said the pandemic is a factor, along with substance abuse in the community.
