IBM has a program to connect vets with technology jobs

IBM has a free resource that provides online job training designed for veterans looking to enter the workforce after their service and gain new skills, along with one-on-one mentoring support, to make them more resilient and successful amid COVID-19. 

SkillsBuild for Vets focuses on helping military veterans gain valuable technology and professional skills as they move out of the armed forces. 

IBM wants to hire 2,000 veterans by 2020

IBM has also added support for veterans in the form of mentoring and helping them navigate their new career path. The company doubled the number of volunteer mentors for veterans to 150 this year. Since 2009, 445 IBM employees have mentored over 1,200 post-9/11 veterans and helped them obtain meaningful civilian employment.

In addition, IBM:

  • Works with the University of Southern California Master of Business for Veterans Program and Capstone Project, providing real business problems for students to solveTeams with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes initiative by creating an IBM Military Fellowship Program providing vets with management training and experience
  • Makes the military community more aware of civilian career opportunities by working with VIQTORY, a military marketing company
  • Partners with Corporate America Supports You (CASY) to provide free instruction and certification for cybersecurity software like QRadar
  • Collaborates with Military Spouse Corporate Career Network (MSCCN) to provide employment readiness training programs to military spouses
  • Work with the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide GRIT, a digital solution to help veterans in transition
  • Created HirePurpose to help employers with their talent acquisition needs, through a virtual job board.
  • Allows military reserve members to serve and return to IBM as needed without restriction

COVID-19 exacerbates job woes for veterans, military spouses

IBM just registered its 1,000th user on the SkillsBuild for Vets platform. The program was launched with non-profit partners including Corporate American Supports You and the USO.
