According to Stone Mountain State Park police, about 200 demonstrators arrived at the park Saturday to calling for the park’s massive Confederate carving to be removed. The mostly armed group was escorted by police.

The protesters left the park before it closed at 4:30 p.m. The park commonly holds a July 4 laser show, but the event was canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Police described the protest as peaceful with no issues.

In the past, the park has been a gathering spot for white supremacists, but today, the city of Stone Mountain has a majority-Black population.
