A swarm of earthquakes has hit the Salton Sea area. The largest had a 4.9 magnitude.

In a 2 and half-hour span that started at 4 p.m. yesterday, there were at least 45 small earthquakes. By 8 p.m., the USGS recorded at least 240 quakes.

People felt shaking in both Imperial and Riverside Counties.

Seismologist Lucy Jones tweeted that the swarm is in the Brawley seismic zone and it's common to see this much activity.

She added that the zone is far enough from the San Andreas fault so that a quake closer to the LA area is not any more likely
